The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has met the CEO of Tesla to discuss electric vehicles and battery gigafactories.

France has worked to support battery production in the country through startups such as Verkor to support car makers such as the Renault group and the Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) group. Mercedes and Stellantis have both invested in another French battery gigafactory startup, ACC.

Tesla has built a gigafactory to produce battery packs and cars outside Berlin, which started production in March this year. However  Tesla’s US battery partner Panasonic has still not announced  site for its European battery gigafactory .

Macron met Elon Musk this weekend during a state visit to the US.  The meeting was of course shown on the social media site Twitter, which Musk bought earlier this year for $44bn.

Macron has been boosting the role of France in technology, with a quantum deal with the US, funding for semiconductor projects and attracting chip makers such as Intel to set up research and assembly plants
