Leading European chip design Nordic Semiconductor is setting up a new design team to develop a processor core based on the open RISC-V instruction set.

The company is expanding its research and development capacity and the IP Design Group (IPD) is looking to build a new CPU team of experienced engineers to supply the digital building blocks (IPs) to Nordic Semiconductor´s portfolio of chip products.

The company has extensive expertise in a range of low-power short-range wireless standards and low-power microcontrollers mostly based around the ARM architecture, although the company also acquired the WiFi business of Imagination Technologies with expertise in the Meta microcontroller core.

The IPD team is looking to recruit a senior design and verification engineer with experience in RISC-V to work at its headquarters in Trondheim, Norway, working alongside the System Architecture Group.

Nordic has more than 1300 employees and started out in 1983with an ARM-based Bluetooth Low Energy chip. The technology range was later supplemented by ANT+, Thread and Zigbee, with a low power, compact LTE-M/NB-IoT cellular IoT chip launched in 2018 to extend the penetration of the IoT and WiFi technology added in 2021.
